Oak Forest High School Celebrates Wellness

Throughout the month of September, staff members and students at Oak Forest High School participated in Wellness Wednesdays.

As part of the celebration, Wednesday morning announcements focused on emotional well-being, stress management, and healthy coping skills. Additionally, music was played during passing periods with songs that included uplifting messages. Staff and students were also encouraged to wear a shirt displaying a positive message on Wednesdays.

Social workers created the campaign at the school to acknowledge the importance of mental health and self-care amongst the student body.

"Being back full time and still battling through this pandemic together, we wanted to highlight the importance of taking care of your mental health and also work towards building a positive and caring community at Oak Forest," said Oak Forest High School Social Worker Cassie Reid.

Outside of Wellness Wednesdays, the Oak Forest High School Social Work Team also led Start With Hello Week, which wraps up today (October 1st).

For those unfamiliar with Start With Hello Week, it's a week celebrated nationwide that stems from the Sandy Hook Promise nonprofit organization.

According to the Sandy Hook Promise website, "Start With Hello is one of Sandy Hook Promise's no-cost Know the Signs programs and teaches students to be more socially inclusive and connected to each other. With activities and curricula available for all ages, students are empowered to end social isolation."

At Oak Forest High School, social workers planned a full week of activities which included:

Monday, September 27th - Students and staff wore camouflage because "nobody should feel invisible." Students could also sign the Start With Hello banner/pledge to be there and look out for their peers.

Tuesday, September 28th - Students and staff celebrated T-Shirt Tuesday by wearing a fun shirt that said something about them and would help spark conversations with others.

Wednesday, September 29th - Students and staff celebrated Wellness Wednesday!

Thursday, September 30th - Students and staff celebrated Team Up Thursday by wearing their favorite sports team. There was also a Random Act of Kindness challenge.

Friday, October 1st - Students and staff celebrated Friendship Friday and wore school colors (black and gold). In the cafeteria, students were given buttons and encouraged to meet a new friend.

On September 28th, the Sophomore Class at Oak Forest High School even went a step further. They wrote encouraging messages on post-it notes and made sure to stick one on every locker throughout the school.
